Been a while since I have done a 26 prints post so I thought I would start with a little bit of work from Jay Ryan.
Jay Ryan is a screen print poster designer who owns a company name the bird machine, inc. located just outside of Chicago.
Looking on his website I was drawn to this particular piece at first which is a poster advertising a beer tasting event which you wouldn’t expect given the name and exciting illustration. It was the vibrant yellow type which drew me in at first with it’s mix of strong, thick structure which fits with sturdy metal kegs and flowing K’s and S’s adding to the randomness of the illustration.
It’s a simple illustration but exciting poster which while it doesn’t appear for a beer festival fits the name perfect.
Ryan always uses strong and beautiful hand draw typography and is work looking for on his website.

Quality, detailed silk screen print here.  I love how it looks like the pattern is attacking the man at the bottom, as if it about to crush him.  If you look at the group of patterns, there is so much to take in, a lot going on that you can’t help but try and take every little bit in, your eyes kind of flow around it involuntarily.  All of the eye looking shapes seem almost big brother esque, as if the man has many eyes on him.

Donald Topp

A great silk screen print by Donald Topp.  I love how the foreground is a silhouette of John Lennon, with scenes of his life in the background.  The overall effect is strange, both parts going in and out of focus as you take it all in, almost like an illusion.  There is a series of these prints with different musicians through time from old to new, and each one looks as good as this.  I like the use of only one colour (As well as black and white), it keeps it minimal and easier to know what is going on.

A beautiful silk screen print by Tim Biskup here, really attractive in its colour and really busy, a lot going on wherever you look.  I like how he has kept to a style, each bird being very different, yet consistent at the same time, you can tell they are all linked.  It reminds me of African art with the bright colours and the way the characters are drawn, that is the impression I get from it.  This would definitely brighten up any room it is placed into.

A fantastic 2 colour screen print from Monkey Ink Design. There is a great use of texture and patterns to create quite a complex piece of design. I really like how the design makes you feel as if your looking up.

This design shows just how well simplicity can work. This is a two colour screen print from illustrator/print maker/surface designer Alanna Cavanagh. I really like how the design doesn’t use registration properly, causing the colour go outside of the shoe’s outline. The linework appears to have been done with ink loosely and this gives it a really nice effect and reinforces the handmade feel and approach.

Life Splicing No. 003: EXP

http://www.alienworkshop.com

A really good video from Alien Workshop showing the progress of a 3 colour screen print for one of their deck designs. What really stood out to me in this video was how much the design came to life once the black layer was put on.

This is also a nice video just to see the screen printing process in action and how they approach doing a multi colour print.

Mattias Sahlen

http://www.mattiassahlen.se/

A nice little bit of hand painted type here by Sahlen.  Sahlen developed this full typeface by hand painting including upper and lower case including punctuation which he says works well in single words. This most interesting thing I found about this particular typeface is the manner in which Sahlen has used it. He has laser cut into a board of wood in quite a jumbled fashion before adding a finish to the wood which i think looks really nice and shows of the type well. The typeface has also been applied to a book in which it has been burnt onto. Sahlen has used hand crafted work throughout this project and created different outcomes which look really nice.

Dance Dance Dance - Ant Baena
http://deadface.co.uk/
A nice one colour screen print from Ant Baena. I really like the typography in this design and how it uses so many different typefaces. The background is very busy with all of the typefaces, but because of the way it’s laid out it doesn’t look messy and isn’t too distracting. The girl in the picture also splits the picture up nicely and creates a good focal point for the eye as it’s simplicity contrasts with the busier background.

Quite a quirky styling to this screen print, reminds me of old labels on food and drinks, with the typography choice and the colours.  There is a lot of detail and a lot going on, so you are never bored wen it comes to taking it all in.  I think the colours work together well, complimenting each other and none of them steal the limelight.  It is a strange use of imagery, giving the chicken human qualities, personifying it.  It kind of gives it a comic twist, something you don’t expect to see.
